The Omaha Region of the Sisters of Mercy covers much of the Midwestern and
western United States. Within a few years of Frances Warde's arrival in
Pittsburgh in 1843, Sisters of Mercy were serving the poor on the Pacific coast,
in the mountains of Colorado and New Mexico, and in the pioneer territories of
the Midwest. The major foundations of the Sisters in those early days were

In 1929 many independent communities voted for amalgamation, and came
together to form the Sisters of Mercy of the Union. The Province of Omaha
covered much of the territory of the above nine states. In 1991,
twenty-five regions of Sisters of Mercy united to form the Sisters
of Mercy of the Americas.
In 2005, the Omaha Regional Community voted to join Auburn,
Burlingame, Cedar Rapids, Chicago and Detroit to form
the West Midwest Community. We are now in the
process of formally merging with 2008 as the anticipated date.
