In 1929, many independent communities voted for amalgamation, and came together to form the Sisters of Mercy of the Union.  The Province of Omaha covered much of the territory of the above nine states.  In 1991, twenty-five regions of Sisters of Mercy united to form the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.
