When the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Raton, New Mexico, in 1922, they came from difficult circumstances in Stanton, Texas.  The Stanton community had struggled with internal strife and outside interference.  Mother Angela Hostetter led five sisters to the small railroad town of Raton to open a parochial school.  An admirable administrator and fund~raiser, Mother Angela was determined to keep her community together and minister to the poor of rural New Mexico.  They labored under many hardships to teach in schools in Raton and Springer.
