Seven Sisters of Mercy arrived in the muddy pioneer town of Omaha in 1864 after a long journey from New Hampshire.  They were the first women religious to come to Nebraska.  Less than a month after their arrival, they opened two schools ~ a parish school and an academy for young ladies.  This was the beginning of the sisters' presence in many schools, both elementary and secondary, in Nebraska.  They established parish schools and academies in several Irish settlements, in addition to schools in Lincoln and Chadron.  Years later, the sisters fulfilled a dream by establishing College of Saint Mary in 1923.
