It is a little known fact that Sisters of Mercy once operated a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Though the Utah foundation was short~lived, it gave birth to the long~standing Mercy presence in Idaho.

In 1916, the sisters left Salt Lake City and made their way to Pocatello, Idaho.  They were warmly welcomed by the local priest, but immediately had to find ways to support themselves.  They took in sewing, and performed home nursing.  By 1918, they had acquired a large debt in order to found a hospital and a school of nursing.  Sisters also responded to a request to staff a hospital in a remodeled house in Nampa.  The hospital was so successful that the sisters moved out of their living quarters to make room for patients, and lived in tents for more than two years before they constructed an adequate building.

Sisters of Mercy remain in Idaho today, serving in healthcare and ministering to the Hispanic community in Nampa and Twin Falls.
